Memories of the Class of 1956!

Winter Flying Dakota Style

I was a passenger in an airplane in western SD... close to Hot Springs ... do not recall the Highway name ... the airplane was getting ice on the wings or wherever ice forms on airplanes.

The pilot landed the airplane on this two lane highway and taxied as far to the right as he could.  A car came over the next rise in the highway, and started honking and swerving (realize there is blowing snow and the usual SD slippery asphalt); the pilots remark was "Has that idiot never seen an airplane before?"

I was laughing at the remark made by the pilot and at the same time fearful that the "honker" would run into us.... did not even have time to feel any serious anxiety, however, because the pilot was calm and was able to avoid the oncoming idiot with the honking horn and to taxi to the top of the next rise in the road; once more to become airborne.  The final destination was to land at the Rapid City Airport, which he did without any more distractions.
